Live – Brand New, I Am The Avalance and The Xcerts.

Brand New played the Southampton Guildhall on Friday 10th February, with support coming from The Xcerts and I Am The Avalanche.

The Xcerts were on first and played a blistering set, showing they’re a force to be reckoned with live as well as on record. From opener  ‘Do You Feel Safe?’ to closer ‘Hurt With Me’ they didn’t let up once and while the audience weren’t singing along, they weren’t checking phones, or talking to one another either giving the impression that they impressed a great many people that night.

Next up were I Am The Avalanche who put on a high energy show that unfortunately varied in quality. When they were good, they were very good but other times they were distinctly average. I feel the lack of crowd response further dejected the Brooklyn based band who didn’t say much, and flew through their  eight song set.

Finally, Brand New took to the stage and blew everyone away with a greatest hits set. I’ve seen them once before at Reading Festival and they seemed disinterested and lackluster but tonight their intensity and passion really shone through. The band put in their all throughout the show and Jesse ended the show on his knees, screaming the closing lines of ‘You Won’t Know’ Highlights os the show were ‘Sic Gloria Transit…’ and the double hitter of ‘Jesus’ and ‘Degausser’.

Words can’t quite convey the power and emotion that Brand New conveyed live that evening, and I can only recommend that next time they tour, you get a ticket. In a similar vein, The Xcerts are days away from announcing a UK tour so check them out as well.
