Live – DZ Deathrays, run Walk! and Black Moth

On Tuesday 6th March I saw DZ Deathrays at The Old Blue Last in London, which was the first of their three night residency there. Support came from run, Walk! and Black Moth.

Black Moth were on first, looking nervous as they took to the stage. However all nerves seemed to vanish as soon as they started playing. Sounding like a female fronted Queens of the Stone Age, their onstage antics seemed stifled by the small stage and I can’t help but wonder how much more powerful they would have been, if given the freedom of space. Nevertheless they delivered a strong set and with their debut album out on May 7th I, for one, will certainly be keeping an eye on them.

run, Walk! confidently took the stage next and started by easing the crowd into their set with a gradual build up of bass and drums before exploding into their first song and they didn’t let up until they left the stage half an hour later. For a support act with only a bass guitar and a drum kit they sounded huge and their set was well received by the crowd. They’ll be appearing at this years 2000 trees festival.

DZ Deathrays have a reputation as an amazing live band and upstairs in The Old Blue Last they exceeded any expectations I had of them. They were phenomenal. Making an incredible amount of noise for just two people, you can almost understand why they were kicked off-stage during the first of their SXSW performances for being too loud. Almost.

The duo put an awesome amount of energy into their forty-five minute set which was a relentless assault on the ears and eyes with heavy riffs and strobe lights that the packed crowd loved and were left clamoring for more. They’re touring almost non stop in 2012 so make sure you go out and see them. Their recordings, while bodacious, do not capture the raw power DZ Deathrays have. That said, their debut album ‘Bloodstreams’ is out on May 7th and promises to tide you over until the next DZ show which will be that month for Brighton’s Great Escape Festival 2012
