Crystal Castles – Plague

Crystal Castles are a duo from Toronto who make experimental bass led rock music.

Crystal Castles are currently working on their third album which is scheduled for release in September and follows on from their two previous self titled full length releases. The duo are playing the Reading and Leeds festivals before heading out on a lengthy US tour but hopefully a European tour will follow shortly as the Crystal Castles live show is a aural and visual assault of the very highest standards.

Last week Crystal Castles unveiled a new track, Plague and offered it up as a free download. It’s the first glimpse we’ve had at the new album and it’s an amazing taster for what’s to come. Ominous and dark, Plague opens with a slow climb of background groans and distant vocals before a heavy bass line punches through the threatening noise and leads in an electro judder. The vocals remain detached and their distance captivates the listener with reassured prowess. It’s a nightmareish track that straddles the line between gothic pop and drum and bass led club tracks, It sounds like it shouldn’t work, but Crystal Castles are experts in creating such tracks with finesse and elegance while still keeping them twisted and edgy.
