Live. Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun

Live. Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun
The Louisiana, Bristol. Sunday 10th February 2013.

As China welcomed the end of the Dragon’s year, the baying crowd at Bristol’s Louisiana celebrated a year belonging to Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun.

With the foundations laid in 2012, Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun could very well grab this year by the horns and sleigh it, Knights Of The Round Table style. And, as anticipated, they’ve kicked it off in heroic fashion.

Home/Hospitals danced with brutality as a playful breakdown drove a sword through the heart of the song while Warriors rallied with a glorious blend of hardcore and country. The Cheltenham four-piece entered foreign land for The Boat Song, performing it in the round. Exposed and vulnerable, Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun endeared and bewitched as their unplugged delicacy shrouded them in charming wonder.  A Song About Death swaggered with ethereal power and closer, England’s Dead, triumphed across the board, balancing the understated beauty and bombast angst that Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun draw from throughout the evening.

Often tied in with the blossoming indie-folk scene, Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun simply aren’t. They do transport you to a fairytale land of optimistic reality with pop tales of passion and heart, underpinned with the reaching charm of an acoustic guitar but that’s where they transcend the genre. Frantic, dashing guitar riffs, bubbling bass implosions and pristine drum hammers collide and entwine to create a charging cavalry of hardcore and punk.

Death, the band’s superb second album has been out ten months and in that time the songs have grown from acoustic tinged odes of sorrow and loss with a never-die shadow into mighty punk defiance, trembling with full-bodied fury and explosive battle cries, uniting through understood anger. The live show has grown as well with more fire, more control and more confidence. Jim, Simon, Chris and Phil are four individual knights battling the same dragon. Fiercely unique but dangerously in-sync with rugged brotherhood, Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun are creating their own tale of unstoppable force that will one day become a legend.
