Review. Mindless Self Indulgence – How I Learned To Stop Giving A Shit And Love Mindless Self Indulgence
Out. Now & April 15th 2013.

Did you really expect anything different from Mindless Self Indulgence? The New York four-piece have been testing the acceptable realms of taste for over fifteen years with their jarring blend of industrial and electronic rock. Album number five or How I Stopped Giving A Shit And Learned To Love Mindless Self Indulgence is just as brash and just as brilliant. Come, celebrate the madness.

Big hip-hop beats are assaulted with snarling punk aggression, as Mindless Self Indulgence continue their callous rampage. From the hyperactive launch of Witness, through the surprising anthem of Hey Tomorrow Fuck You And Your Friend Yesterday to the cheery fairytale of Ass Backwards, the band have never sounded so grand. Electro slants clear a space through crisp drum beats while the bass, rugged and chaotic, provides a launch pad for the bouncing vocals.

Boisterous and unforgiving, few bands embrace fun in the same way that MSI do. Their steam-punk get up alienates them as individuals but unites them as a group. Physically distancing themselves from other bands, MSI don’t hold back in any other aspect of their performance. Their music is excitable, the lyrics crass and the song titles telling. However, beneath the jubilance the band paint a rich social commentary that tackles big issues with wit and bravado.

Behind the contention, the true face of Mindless Self Indulgence is revealed. They’re a band embracing their own mortality as both musicians and individuals, but question growing up. (‘You’re No Fun Anymore.’) They’re a band who indulge in nostalgia (Kill You All In A Hip Hop Rage) but refuse to dwell on the past. (Hey Tomorrow…).  Ultimately, Mindless Self Indulgence don’t care what the future holds.  Between lust-fuelled riots and attacks on the cult of celebrity, they find themselves content in the here and now. That is what How I Stopped Giving A Shit And Learned To Love Mindless Self Indulgence celebrates and is the surprising moral at the close of this decadent and decayed party.
